Milk fever is merely a visible symptom of hypocalcaemia
Deficient calcium in the blood, hypocalcaemia, may be compared with an iceberg, which has a small part protruding above the water, whilst most of it is under the surface. During calving you only detect clinical milk fever, which is the part of the iceberg above the surface.
But under the surface newly calved cows are at increased risk of contracting serious diseases with hypocalcaemia as a risk factor. These include calving difficulties because of calves being wrongly positioned, poor contractions, retained placenta, metritis, mastitis, displacement of the abomasum and ketosis. Learn more.
